Killing the Goddess
It happened while I was on safari,
In some stereotypically humid jungle
And I only say safari because that's where these things always seem to happen.
We came upon a village of primitives,
complete with straw huts and the community fire pits.
The guide said they were friendly and so we stayed the night.
It was when I awoke I saw her,
she was so beautiful
fetching the water
from a slender little well.
No one else was around,
or they were sleeping
that silent quiet uninterrupted sleep.
I approached her and she smiled as she turned and saw me.
A radiant radiant smile beyond belief
because she was supposed to be beautiful,
but also because she transcended all the stereotypes
and was just herself, filled with warmth, intellect and anything else you find desirable.
I had to kill her, quickly, quietly (although in the end it is a slow slow death).
True, it was what you expected,
but to have left that village
and know that she existed
would have been even more unbearable.
And sometimes,
It's just not possible to stay.
